The Stolen Generation is a term used to describe the children of Australian Aboriginal descent who were removed from their families by the Australian and State government agencies. The removal occurred approximately between 1869 and 1969. The rationale behind their removal include child protection, belief that given their catastrophic population decline post white contact that black people would “die out”, fears of miscegenation, which is the mixing of different racial groups, and the desire to attain white racial purity. A British select Committee examined the treatment of Indigenous people in all British colonies and recommended that “Protectors of Aborigines” be appointed in Australia. The kids were taken to facilities to separate them from their culture and introduce them to white culture, in hopes to slowly integrate them into the modern society.
